Joni Schwalbach
Joni Schwalbach (João Carlos Ferreira dos Santos Schwalbach) is a Mozambican composer, pianist/keyboardist, sound designer, producer, arranger, ethnomusicologist, videographer, and entrepreneur whose career spans more than three decades. Born in Maputo in 1970, he studied Popular Music at UNICAMP in Brazil (specializing in piano and soundtracks for cinema) and completed an MA in Ethnomusicology at SOAS, University of London, deepening his understanding of music as a vessel of memory, identity, and community.
From an early age, Joni established himself as a central figure in Mozambican music. Since 1993, he has been a leading member and director of Ghorwane, one of the country’s most legendary bands, performing worldwide and preserving Mozambique’s rich musical heritage while pushing it toward new directions. Alongside this, he has cultivated a diverse solo career and collaborated as pianist, arranger, and producer in projects that bridge African roots with global soundscapes.
Joni is the founder of Ekaya Productions Lda, a creative hub working across recording, audio and video production, sound design, film music, jingles, concert production, and distribution. He also created the independent label Ekaya ManInGroove and co-founded Maningue Productions Lda, a company specializing in large-scale concerts, festivals, and artist management. In 2017, together with Luís Moreira, he launched Mozambique Music Meeting (MMM), a showcase festival and music market in Maputo that has since become a vital platform for connecting Mozambican and international artists with global audiences.
His work extends far beyond the stage. Joni has composed music for film, theatre, and television, creating soundtracks for acclaimed directors such as Licínio de Azevedo and Sol de Carvalho, and producing scores for international campaigns with brands including Coca-Cola, Vodacom, and Barclays. His reputation as a sound designer and composer has made him a reference point for marrying African textures with contemporary orchestral and cinematic sound.
Parallel to his musical path, Joni has directed and produced films for more than a decade, with a distinctive artistic approach rooted in music. For him, every image begins with rhythm and texture — his films are built from a musical foundation, turning sound into visual narrative. He has produced works for NGOs, companies, artists, and cultural institutions, always blurring the lines between image and melody.
As an ethnomusicologist, he continues to explore Mozambique’s cultural heritage and broader socio-economic contexts, contributing research that bridges scholarship with practice. As a consultant for cultural and artistic affairs, he has advised institutions, supported emerging artists, and contributed to shaping Mozambique’s cultural landscape on both a local and international level.

Pianist & Keyboardist
